Celebratory Displays and a Cheer to Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration of an agreement projected to result in the release of hostages held within Gaza for over 24 months has generated joy and comfort throughout the nation.
An organization which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—still requiring approved by Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered ahead of the agreement’s signing.
A crowd began clapping and dancing under American and Israeli banners—one woman holding up a placard saying: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
Another, Yael, aged 50, cried while observing the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We must witness their return home to their loved ones.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker said as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering “L’chaim”, which means “to life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in advocating for an agreement which ensures the return of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he was “shattered” that his cousin would not be among those returning home but was “glowing with joy” for the families of the hostages who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and all he has done for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and hugging Eitan feels closer than ever,” she commented.
However, she warned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things can happen up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who participated in the work and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
