El Kaabi's Stunning Goal Caps Morocco's Triumph Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.

Host nation the Moroccan side overcame a jittery beginning to defeat Comoros in the tournament's first match on Sunday, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a far from convincing performance, however, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who are ranked 97 places above the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and were forced to toil hard for the three points in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Start and Spurned Opportunities

The hosts missed an first-half spot-kick and were goalless at half-time even with dominating the ball, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

The goal came when full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before slipping it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

“The first match is always difficult but we came good in the second period,” commented manager Walid Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently calmed by a piece of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes following coming on, the striker met a cross with a spectacular overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the result.

Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a penalty was awarded for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi effort was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.

The Visitors' Resistance and Late Chance

Comoros comfortably held Morocco for long periods before the Moroccans' individual talent eventually told.

Goalkeeper Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the score as the game progressed, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equalizer shortly after the first goal, with Saïd firing directly into Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.

Fitness Worry for Morocco

The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's captain, Saïss, who was forced off in the first half in some distress.

The defender had just made his comeback to the national side recently following a lengthy absence caused by ankle surgery.

The win extends Morocco's record-breaking run of successive wins to 19, surpassing the old best of 15 set by the Spanish national team from 2008 and 2009.
