Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The economist stated he would step back from public duties after Congressional panel disclosed his regular communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.

The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected the economist's decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," the organization stated.

Legislative Background

This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will then proceed to the desk of the White House for endorsement. He has stated he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.

The messages revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link Summers to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to reestablish faith and fix bonds with the people most important to me".

Career Background

Summers served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the institution.

Summers joined the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
