Jennifer Lawrence Says Speaking About Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ Tearing the Nation Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer fitting to comment publicly regarding the Trump government, concerned it could exacerbate divisive discussions and further divisions across the United States.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner commented, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I felt like I was moving hastily without clear direction. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, public figures have no real impact whatsoever on voter decisions.”
Lawrence added, “So then what am I doing? I’m just expressing personal views on something that’s going to heighten conflict that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about voting for both right and leftwing contenders in past elections. Raised by conservative Republicans in her home state, she voted for John McCain in the 2008 election then moving to the left-leaning politics and stating she understood during the Obama era that supporting the GOP was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.
Earlier Remarks
In 2015, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “the end of the world” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “because I believe she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to safeguard abortion access.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Lawrence was joined by numerous celebrities in her opposition to Donald Trump as a returning figure, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was highlighted by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years feels different,” commented she of his leadership. “Since he stated his intentions. We understood his record for the previous administration. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”
New Release
The actor is highlighting her new film, the filmmaker’s project in which she plays a new mother who struggles with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a media event for the film in Venice, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s devastating. What’s occurring is equivalent to a atrocity and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by expressing that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discussions of U.S. political debates at present and how that is going to be normalised to the children today. It’s going to be normal to them that elected officials deceive.”
Lawrence sought to redirect anger about the conflict to policymakers rather than actors and artists. “Concentrate on who is responsible,” she advised, seen by observers as a nod to the declaration signed by more than 4,000 Hollywood professionals to boycott certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
The actor, who won an Oscar early in her career for her part in the acclaimed film, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. Although the director has denied the plot being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and psychological distress, Lawrence said that she identified with parts of her film narrative after the delivery of her new baby, soon after shooting ended.
“It was fear regarding my baby,” she explained, “envisioning every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I got on a treatment called the prescription and I used it for a short period and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
Lawrence also spoke about the liberating necessity of filming without clothes in the project while she was in pregnancy and couldn’t work out.
“There’s a freedom,” she remarked, of being forced to cast off vanity. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What technically are the differences between my work and that profession? But it isn’t a major concern.”
