The State of Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Producers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding potential dangers of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the makers of acetaminophen, claiming the firms concealed potential risks that the medication created to children's brain development.

The lawsuit arrives a month after Former President Trump promoted an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - alternatively called acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism in children.

The attorney general is suing J&J, which once produced the medication, the exclusive pain medication approved for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "betrayed America by gaining financially from suffering and marketing drugs without regard for the dangers."

The company says there is insufficient reliable data connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, knowingly endangering countless individuals to boost earnings," Paxton, from the Republican party, stated.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the safety of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a verified association between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Groups speaking for physicians and health professionals agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for pregnant women to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can pose significant medical dangers if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of research on the use of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of pregnancy leads to neurological conditions in young ones," the organization stated.

This legal action cites current declarations from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he instructed women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to take acetaminophen when unwell.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that physicians should contemplate reducing the usage of acetaminophen, while also declaring that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been established.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to undertake "comprehensive study program" that would determine the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But experts advised that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism is a form of enduring cognitive variation and disability that influences how people perceive and interact with the surroundings, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking US Senate - asserts Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and sought to suppress the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case aims to force the corporations "remove any marketing or advertising" that claims acetaminophen is safe for expectant mothers.

The Texas lawsuit mirrors the concerns of a group of guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

Judicial authorities dismissed the case, saying investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was not conclusive.
